Mini Review – Canon 500D 77mm Close Up Lens

Just received Canon 500D 77mm Close Up Lens and immediately mounted it on the Nikon 70-200mm with my Nikon D3 … WOW shallow depth of field is the first thing that hits you with this setup. But the smooth bokeh this combo produces is simply astonishing:

No, I would not highly recommend Canon 500D. There’s no substitute for a dedicated macro lens. The reason I bought it was to save on weight while hiking, but it requires too much time to mount it onto 70-200 lens to be useful for me in the field. It’s a good solid piece of glass but it’s just not something I use much due to how cumbersome it is.

Depending on your use, it could be highly recommended. For some photographers who hike considerable distances with a lot of gear, saving weight by leaving the macro at home and taking the 500d might be a plus. Or, if simply traveling with the camera and 70-200mm mounted, keeping the 500d in a pocket along with a 1.4TC will provide you a 280mm f/4 or pseudo-macro when needed, with minimal extra weight. The 500d certainly serves a purpose, but maybe not for everyone!
